The title “Three Hierarchs” is used by the Eastern Orthodox Church to honor St. Basil the Great (Basil of Caesarea), St. Gregory the Theologian (Gregory of Nazianzus), and St. John Chrysostom. They are also known as the Three Great Hierarchs and the Ecumenical Teachers. These three were prominent bishops of the early Christian church and were instrumental in the development of Christian theology. The three are recognized as saints by the Eastern Orthodox Church, Catholic Church, Anglican Church, and other Christian churches. In Roman Catholicism the three are honored as Doctors of the Church.
